From the end of the Second World War and for over forty years, the history of Albania was inextricably linked to that of a single man. Enver Hoxha led the country through fleeting alliances and radical ruptures, until he brought it to total isolation. Film di Stato recounts those forty years of the Albanian communist regime through the images that the regime produced to portray itself. Constructed entirely from often previously unseen archive material – official propaganda films, footage from the regime’s confidential or private archives – this work is a journey through images and sounds within a regime that made cinema an instrument of power.
