Based on a popular Neapolitan song, ‘A santanotte is one of the few films still available among those directed by Elvira Notari at Dora Film. Nanninella is a young woman exploited and mistreated by her father, whom she supports with her wages as a maid. Forced to marry a man she does not love in a desperate attempt to save her lover from a murder charge, Nanninella is destined for a tragic end, which pushes the film’s poignant tones to a veritable paroxysmal climax: stabbed on her wedding day, in her wedding dress, in the finest tradition of the Neapolitan sceneggiata.
