Ennio is a comprehensive portrait of Ennio Morricone, one of the most popular and prolific musicians of the 20th century, beloved by international audiences, a two-time Oscar® winner, and the composer of over 500 unforgettable soundtracks. The documentary tells his story through an in-depth interview conducted by Tornatore with the Maestro, testimonies from artists and directors such as Bertolucci, Montaldo, Bellocchio, Argento, the Taviani brothers, Verdone, Barry Levinson, Roland Joffè, Oliver Stone and Quentin Tarantino – alongside fictional scenes, music and archive footage. Ennio is also an exploration aimed at revealing that which is little known about Morricone. Such as his passion for chess, which perhaps has mysterious links to his music. But also the realistic origins of certain musical intuitions, such as the coyote howl that inspired the theme for The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, or the rhythmic clapping of hands on tin cans by strikers leading a protest march through the streets of Rome, which inspired the beautiful theme of Sostiene Pereira. A flair for invention confirmed by his enduring love for classical music and his vocation for persistent experimentation.
